Lygon Street in the heart of Carlton, Melboume, is the Italian restaurant capital of Australia, with more than 100 restaurants, bars and cafes lining the street al fresco style. Many of the street’s facades are heritage listed and date back over a century. In keeping with the rich, cultural history of the area, a blend of traditional and contemporary use of stone has been used to create the world-class Piazza Italia at Lygon Streeet’s popular Argyle Square. The project, which won the Master Builders Association of Victoria 2006 award for Excellence in Stonemasonry, is a world-first outside Europe showcasing traditional Italian material and Stonemasonry techniques,. The piazza’s main features are a central artwork highlighted by a bronze and stainless steel solar clock and the surrounding traditional handcrafted paving. The main piazza area consistes of calsssic conbination of 140, 000 imported mixed red and grey Italian prophyry stone cubes. Laid on a bed of crushed bluestone aggregate, the cobblestones are bordered in a contemporary treatment utilising high-contrast white segmented marble radial and perimeter edge bands. Porphyry has been used since ancient times, Important relics and monuments in porphyry have been discovered at Assyrian-Babylonian, Egytian and Roman sites. In Roman times red porphyry was a symboa of great prestige and majesty. The ancient craft of laying porphyry was given a new dimension for the Lygon St piazza, by applying classic patterns of parallel, overlapping arcs to the intricate, radiating pattern of the solar clock pavement. Andra Tomaselli and Dianne Beevers of Italian Porphyry won the public art tender commisssioned by the City of Melboume to design the piazze, create the central artwork and coordiante the piazza paving. The piazza was constucted by a Construct, with the stonework laid by two Austrualian stonemasons from O’ Connor & Sons in Ivanhoe, who travelled to Italy to acquire the mecessary skills to lay the porphyry using traditional methods of the Trento region in Northern Italy.
