Separation of powers What recently happened in Brazil between Abirochas, the country’s stone association, and the international tradeshow in Vitoria confirms what those – like us – have been maintaining for years: that working cooperation between different sector organizations is feasible and a good thing only when there is a net separation of powers, when it is very clear who represents who and who does what and why. But let’s take things in order... In long-ago 1998, after years in which various Brazilian unions, local associations and diverse district organizations strove to represent, individually and disjointedly, the interests of the many stone operators scattered through Brazil’s different states and regions, there was finally the birth of Abirochas – the Brazilian National Stone Industry Association – for the evident purpose of unitarily representing the invests of the entire sector. As could be expected, the newborn association immediately began to reap the fruits of a new, shared, sector strategy, quickly raking in promotional and institutional successes thanks mainly a policy of openness to international cooperation with important institutional partners in foreign countries which inevitably broadened results inside and outside national orders. Then, after years of cooperation with and support for the Sao Paolo tradeshow.
